Internet in the consultation: a necessity

When I wrote to you about the need to communicate with the pediatrician and the different ways to do this, I had not realized that many consultations lack access to the Internet. I recently found that having the Internet in the office is a claim of many medical professionals.

On the Internet web page in the consultation: a need claim Internet access. It is a initiative created by primary care pediatricians from various autonomous communities, to claim unrestricted access to the Network from all consultations of health professionals.

The Spanish Association of Primary Care Pediatrics has recently conducted a survey on this issue among those responsible for their federated regional associations, and the results show that there are Communities in which Internet access is severely restricted.

And this implies, as they explain on the Internet website in the consultation, that it is not possible to access not only general information search engines such as Google, but also the websites of medical and scientific entities that the system does not recognize as allowed.

The "Internet in the consultation: a necessity" initiative is supported by entities such as the Spanish Association of Pediatrics, Spanish Association of Primary Care Pediatrics (AEPap), Spanish Society of Outpatient and Primary Care Pediatrics (SEPEAP) or the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (semFYC), among many others.

In their initial manifesto they point out the relevance of the use of the Internet as a means of communication with patients, among other functions:

We request open and unrestricted access to the Internet from the consultations of Spanish health professionals to solve a real need, both of them and of the population served, and which is specified in: * Need for INFORMATION. Virtually everything is accessible through the Network. A health center is also an information center that, to properly perform its function, requires access to any available data source. * Need for TRAINING. Continuing education is part of a doctor's job. Online teaching with multimedia technology is one of the most widespread training paths in biomedical sciences. The Internet is currently the largest library of medical and health-related issues. * Need for COMMUNICATION At all levels: with patients, colleagues, managers and the community. * Need for PARTICIPATION. Current medicine involves the participation and help of the patient in making clinical decisions that affect his health, and also of the groups of patients.

Given that I am one of the many mothers and fathers that we would like to communicate with our children's pediatricians on the Internet, and that in my workplace, although in another area, there are also certain restrictions that are extremely inconvenient for the development of My teaching work, I support this initiative.

I also believe that Internet in the pediatrician's office is a necessity and that its good use would facilitate the work of many professionals and their relationship with families.
