Some food allergies can start from pregnancy

Having a child with food allergies is something that requires a lot of patience and dedication, since you must stay more attentive to what you eat, reviewing the ingredients in the food we buy in the market or in the dishes in the restaurants.

In the same way he struggles by having to explain and convince other people not to give him certain foods because they cause some allergic reaction. Fortunately, little by little, new advances are being discovered that prevent or control them, as well as understand why these types of allergies occur which usually appear after 6 months, when it is introduced to complementary feeding.

A new study developed by the Jiménez Díaz Foundation, located in Madrid, has discovered that during pregnancy the fetus may develop food allergies, which explains why some children who have never tried certain foods have allergic reactions to them.

Twenty pregnant women participated in this research, who were analyzed amniotic fluid to know almost immediately how the fetus was evolving and to be able to specifically find the presence of any allergy.

It was discovered that Until the 20th week of pregnancy, the products taken by the mother and passed to the amniotic fluid can become food allergens, that is, they can lead babies to acquire certain food allergies even though they have never eaten them. According to the researchers, after 20 weeks the fetus participates in the formation of the amniotic fluid and at the end of pregnancy it is the one that is most involved in it, which reduces the influence of the maternal diet at the level of food allergens.

The main foods of which allergens appeared were all those derived from milk, as well as fruit, egg, fish, nuts and wheat. Thanks to this study it is explained why some children have allergic reactions to certain foods even though they have never eaten them.

According to data from the Spanish Society of Clinical Immunology and Pediatric Allergy (SEICAP), between 4% and 8% of Spanish children suffer from a food allergy, and the main symptoms that are suffered are itching, breathing problems, vomiting, diarrhea, asthma and swelling of the face, among others.
