Kraamzorg, the postpartum care with which all mothers dream

Although for each mother it is different, the postpartum can become a very difficult, confusing and heavy stage. We are recovering from a delivery or caesarean section while at the same time we must take care of a newborn.

It is certainly a time when all the help we can get is very useful. Y In Holland they know it well, because they have a postpartum care service for all women who have just had a baby.

What does it consist of?

His name is Kraamzorg and according to Wikipedia it is a medical service that is provided in Holland to recent mothers and their baby during the eight to 10 days after delivery.

It basically consists of home visits by a nurse or health professional to support the mother in the care of the newborn. The person in charge of doing this is called kraamverzorgster and his responsibility is to make sure that the mother has a good and fast recovery, as well as checking that the baby is developing properly.

The preparation to receive the kraamzorg It begins during the 34th week of pregnancy, in which the mother goes to the agency of her choice to provide this service, which is included in most of the medical insurance plans in the Netherlands. Depending on the type of birth the mother will have, at home or in the hospital, she will be provided with the appropriate help for her needs.

Once the baby is born, the opening hours for the kraamzorg will depend on various factors. The support can be basic, minimal and flexible, adjusting to what the mother and baby need.

Some of the functions of the person making the visits include making sure that the area where the mother and the baby are located is clean and safe, checking that the mother is recovering well after childbirth and supporting in case there is any problem about Baby feeding.

Postpartum care: something necessary but little practiced

While it is true that each mother experiences postpartum differently, the truth is that the arrival of a baby comes to completely modify all our routines and care.

Having help and advice during the first days is something that definitely all mothers should have the possibility to choose if we have it or not. This is the stage where many doubts arise and where we can solve or treat certain problems from the beginning so that we have a better and easier postpartum.

What would happen if we all had it

When I learned of the existence of this kind of support, I began to think about how things would be if all the mothers in the world could receive it. No doubt the vision of many about motherhood would change.

First, we would have someone to turn to to solve all our doubts, inform us and make decisions in a responsible and conscious way.

Secondly, having a professional nearby could help to keep an eye on the mother's emotional state after birth and detect postpartum depression early to avoid situations that end tragically and unfortunately.

And thirdly, the transition to our new life as mothers would be easier and possibly we would feel less overwhelmed during the first days in what we adapt to life with a newborn.

Hopefully this type of care will soon be extended to more countries, because although many mothers are sure to choose to have privacy and be alone during the first weeks with their babies, It is an option that no doubt all mothers should be able to have.
