The mother's work stress predisposes to low birth weight

Statistics indicate that more and more babies are born with low weight. Among the responsible causes are factors such as environmental pollution, smoking, a nutritional deficit of the mother, suffering traumatic events during pregnancy and of course, maternal stress.

According to a recent study published in American Journal of Public Health the mother's work stress during the first trimester increases the risk of the baby being born underweight by 50% during pregnancy time.

Most women, those who can, reduce the workday at the end of pregnancy, but according to researchers, the greatest risk is in the first weeks.

An extensive work week of 32 hours or more and intense work stress during the first stage of pregnancy is a harmful combination for the future baby.

Recall that being born with a low weight is not only being born small, but with a weight below normal for the weeks of gestation. This can condition the baby to suffer a series of difficulties such as learning problems, eye diseases, increased risk of epilepsy and suffering depression in adulthood.

We do not speak only of jobs with great responsibility, sometimes the tension can be greater in very demanding and low-paid jobs.

Therefore, as a recommendation, although in practice it can hardly be realized, experts advise those women who have full-time jobs that are too stressful to reduce work effort and work hours in the first weeks of pregnancy.
