Casein in chalk and children allergic to cow's milk proteins

This study was recently carried out by the Allergology of the Health Department of Marina Baixa to identify the risks of children allergic to dairy products.

The Spanish Association of Food Allergy (AEPNAA) indicates that in Spain the percentage of allergic to cow's milk in the first year of life is between 0.36% and 1.95% and occupies the third place in the Allergic pathologies behind egg and fish allergy. Although in most cases this allergy disappears during the first years of the child's life in some children remains.

And it is that in addition to food, also some medicines, paper, ink, glue and many others may contain proteins, caseins or seroproteins and cause allergic reactions in patients who are especially sensitive to them. In the case of chalk, casein is used as a binder to compact it and try to reduce dust emission.

In the study, 14 patients allergic to milk protein were analyzed and after performing skin and blood tests on children with milk proteins and with a chalk extract, it was found that a large percentage of casein allergies also showed positive results against chalk.

So we have to pay special attention to those of us who are allergic to cow's milk proteins because the inhalation of chalk dust that contains casein can cause asthma symptoms.
