They operate for the first time a premature baby of 1.5 kilos of a congenital heart disease

Premature babies are especially vulnerable, and yet they prove to be great little fighters, like Victoria, a premature triplet to whom have operated on a congenital heart disease when I barely weighed 1.5 kilos. Now it weighs 2,450 grams and evolves favorably.

Is the first time In the world an intervention is performed on a child of such low weight, and was performed by a team of cardiologists from the Miguel Servet Children's Hospital of Zaragoza.

The little girl was born with 31 weeks gestation and five days after her birth she was detected pulmonary atresia, a rare congenital disease, which involves a lack of perforation of the valve of the artery that goes to the lungs. It prevented her from breathing on her own, so a decision had to be made: either she operated on it or the baby died.

Although the operation is "a bit complex," according to doctors, because it is a catheterization without open surgery, the girl's low weight as well as the size of her arteries constituted an important risk.

At 14 days of life he was operated by introducing a tiny 1.5 mm stent through the artery of the leg until he reached the damaged valve. Fortunately, the girl has already left the ICU and is recovering very well.

Every time we talk about save lives to such young children, even when they are not yet born, I am still surprised at the great advance of medicine, but above all, the strength and the desire to live that these babies have.
