CIBERobn develops a successful program to prevent childhood obesity

The explanation for the epidemic of childhood obesity is largely found in the high level of sedentary lifestyle of children and adolescents. Spain is the third European country with more childhood obesity.

The Center for Biomedical Research Network - Pathophysiology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn) aims to reverse by designing programs and therapies that have as a matrix the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits from an early age, such as dietary changes based on the pattern of the Mediterranean diet, modifications of eating behavior and promoting physical activity.

This is where the Physical Exercise program was born to prevent childhood and youth obesity led by Dr. Lurbe and has already made great progress

This program has obtained new and satisfactory results thanks to biomedical shirts that allow real-time heart and lung activity. The experimental use in children of these 'smart' garments instead of the traditional calorimeters represents a new advance in anti-obesity treatments and confirms the benefits of the use of ICT in medicine.

This program has a key, and it is their individualized design, so that they respond to the needs and characteristics of each patient. This is because generic guidelines can be ineffective, and even counterproductive; since in addition to developing physical activity, it must be done according to what our body can bear and needs.

The new garments overcome the inconveniences of calorimeters, incorporating wireless sensors that continuously collect different parameters. This tool is the Suitable candidate for many pathophysiological and clinical applications, in the field of obesity, and in others, where physical exercise is essential.

To prove the effectiveness of these shirts centers the doctoral thesis recently presented by Jaime Guixeres, surpassed with cum laude and tutored by Dr. Lurbe. The work has been carried out in collaboration with another team of the CIBERobn of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, through Javier Saiz and Mariano Alcañiz.
