"Dad, take care of your heart": the importance of educating children about cardiovascular risks

Surely you've ever seen Some child who tells his parents not to smoke. And, what they do not learn at home, they can learn through other channels. In this sense, schools do an important job, especially in the event that information on healthy lifestyles transfers the child to his parents.

According to the Spanish Heart Foundation, leading healthy habits since childhood could prevent 80% of cardiovascular diseases. Y the education of children could positively influence the health of the parents' heart, being the little ones who instill health habits in their parents. And how is this achieved?

A study by the European Society of Cardiology showed in 2011 that through a multidisciplinary educational program of cardiovascular prevention carried out in schoolchildren, the cardiovascular risk of parents could be reduced thanks to the great influence that children have on father and mother.

The program included written informational material, videos, movies, games, talks with different specialists in medicine, nutrition, psychologists, teachers ... The results were spectacular: since the paternal cardiovascular risk was reduced by up to 91%.

According to 2013 data, Almost 31% of deaths in Spain were due to cardiovascular diseases. And although a part of the risk factors is determined by genetic factors on which we cannot act, there are others that we can minimize and improve with our daily lives.

That is why the proposal that this week (in which World Heart Day has been celebrated) has been presented by the Spanish Society of Cardiology (SEC) and the Spanish Heart Foundation (FEC), is particularly interesting, within the Mimocardio project that aims to raise awareness about The importance of caring for the heart.

Is about MimoKids, whose goal is to get children to integrate healthy lifestyle habits for their hearts and that they understand and transmit the importance of these habits to their families. In this way possible cardiovascular diseases are prevented in the future and not only of children but also of their parents.

The first initiative is a play "Adventure in a heart on cardiovascular health", which will be represented in multiple primary schools in Spain by the students themselves, with the materials provided by Mimokids.

We hope you really our children become aware of the importance of healthy habits, if it is through a play your attention is assured because there is no better way to learn than through fun. We must also set an example and, if we are aware of the importance of this issue, transmit it to the little ones. The health of the whole family is also in the health of the heart.
