A few days ago we talked about spinners because they are the fashion toy today. A toy that I do not think lasts a long time, because honestly, it does not contribute much, but right now it is causing rage.
The fact is that some of the parts, depending on the model, get out of the structure. I know because it happened to my children when one has dropped. And that can make them dangerous depending on what the boy or girl is doing with him. A few days ago the news of a girl who had to go to the emergency room to suffocate with a piece.
They had to be extracted under sedation
As we read on CNN, his mother, Kelly Rose Joniec, decided to share it on his Facebook to alert his contacts. Apparently, he was driving with his daughter sitting in the back seat when he suddenly heard her breathing with great difficulty. When he saw the spinner, he realized that one of the pieces that add weight to the "blades" was missing to favor the rotation as long as possible.
He tried to help her get the object out with the Heimlich maneuver. Seeing that he did not succeed, they went to the nearest hospital, where an x-ray showed where the object was stuck.
Through an endoscopy and under sedation they were able to find the object and extract it. Everything ended well, but the parents had a very bad time because of the risk of moving and making their breathing even more difficult.
They failed to contact the manufacturers
After the event, the parents tried to contact several spinner manufacturers to explain what had happened and to take it into account, without success. But nevertheless, Learning Express Toys, a company that distributes them to various stores in the North American country and warns on its website that it contains small parts, that there is a risk of suffocation and that It is not suitable for children under 3 years.
There are several schools where the use of spinners has been banned, not because of this risk of suffocation, but because instead of serving as an element of concentration, it seems to be functioning as distraction element.
In the case of this girl, it seems that the problem is that she herself did not realize that the piece could come out while, most likely, she had it in her mouth. So, although something like that is unlikely to be repeated, it is worth mentioning so that parents are aware that it can be dangerous for young children, and that the elders have to be careful with them (as with everything that contains small pieces that are easily separated from the gadget).
