How to take care of children's eyes in summer

In summer we must pay special attention to both the skin of our children and their eyes. Certain factors typical of this time of year, such as the sun, sea salt, pool chlorine or air conditioning can affect your eye health.

Like adults we protect our eyes in summer, with more reason we should protect the children since their eye structures are in full development and the damages that the eye could suffer at this stage could cause future problems.

Protecting the eye health of the little ones is very simple if we follow some basic prevention tips both inside and outside the water.

Quality sunglasses

If adults protect our eyes with sunglasses, why not do the same with our children's eyes?

Experts say that if children used approved sunglasses they would avoid the appearance of many future eye diseases that are closely related to the radiation received during the first years of life.

Therefore, eye doctors recommend that in sunny countries like ours, children always wear hats or sun visors and sun glasses with UV and UVB filter, sold in optic.

Water diving goggles

Pools and the sea are an important focus of eye irritations and infections, so it is recommended that children always bathe with diving goggles. In this way we will avoid the annoying red eyes caused by chlorine and salt, as well as problems with continuous tearing, irritation or blurred vision.

Protection against air conditioning and fans

Prolonged use of the air conditioning, both in the home and in the car or fans, especially if the air directly affects, can cause, among other problems, the dry eye syndrome. This can lead to children with mild eye discomfort and scratching their eyes frequently.

If we have babies or young children and we are going to use air conditioning, it is important to do it following some basic recommendations to avoid health problems, but if our children still complain about the eyes, we can combat dryness using physiological serum or artificial tears.

Wash their hands often

This rule should be basic at any time of the year, and not only as a measure of prevention of eye diseases but of other respiratory or gastrointestinal infections.

If children rub their eyes with dirty or sand-filled hands, infections or damage to the eyeball can result, so frequent washing is one of the most important preventive measures.

With these simple tips we will not only be protecting our children's eyes but avoiding future problems. Because, as in everything related to health, prevention starts from childhood.
