The best diaper creams on the market, according to the OCU

The moment of changing the baby's diaper usually brings many doubts to the parents, especially when we are first time. How to carry out proper hygiene? What diapers are better? How to prevent and treat dermatitis? What products do we have to avoid?

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) published last year a report on diaper creams, in which they analyzed and valued various criteria. As this product is something that we use frequently when we have babies, we have considered that it is worth recovering the data from this study and showing it to you. What is, according to the OCU, the best diaper cream on the market?

Marks of the creams analyzed

According to the OCU, the analysis was carried out thanks to the test of 20 volunteers who measured the effectiveness of each cream in dermatitis and the loss of water at 15, 30 and 60 minutes of application.

The results obtained were published in a report that assesses the different characteristics of the main brands of the market, using scores from 1 to 5. These brands are:

  • Mustela
  • Chicco Baby moments
  • Lutsine Eryplast water paste
  • Johnsons diaper protective cream
  • Johnsons Baby Regenerating Cream
  • Mitosyl
  • Bepanthol
  • Halibut regenerating ointment
  • Nutraisdín
  • Weleda Calendula
  • Suavinex
  • Avéne Pediatril
  • Baby sebamed

Laboratory test assessments

The laboratory tests analyzed by the OCU refer to two parameters:

  • On the one hand, the skin barrier recovery, that is, the ability of the cream to contribute to the natural recovery of the skin.

In this sense, the best rated creams were Mustela, Chicco Baby moments and Weleda Calendula. In contrast, the worst score obtained at this point are Sebamed, Suavinex and Avéne Pediatril.

  • On the other hand, the effectiveness of the cream against redness, and although no brand stands out especially in this field, we found an average score in the Halibut, Sebamed, Mitosyl, Suavinex and Eryplast brands.

Instead, the worst rated would be Johnsons Baby Regenerating Cream and Weleda Calendula.

Usage test: cosmetic qualities

As for the product use test, the OCU divides it into different subcategories such as application, absorption, texture, paste consistency and perfume.

  • Refering to product application, more or less all brands get the same intermediate score, slightly above Johnsons Baby regenerating cream, Mustela, Chicco Baby moments, Nutraisdín and Lutsine.

  • With respect to product and perfume absorption, again all creams get more or less the same score, highlighting Nutraisdín as the brand that has the best perfume.

  • And finally, if we analyze the creamy consistency of creams, the OCU affirms that the Lutsine Eryplast brand is the most dense because it is a water paste, while Bepanthol, Johnsons Baby regenerating cream and Avéne Pediatril are the most liquid.

Use test: perceived effectiveness

The cream efficacy test encompasses the analysis of four characteristics: the relief of irritation, the improvement of redness, hydration and the sensation it leaves on the skin after application.

  • Improvement of irritations and relief of redness: according to the OCU, both functions are fulfilled by all brands more or less equitably, although Halibut and, above all, Lutsine Eryplast are the best rated.

  • Refering to hydration three brands stand out above the rest, and they are again Halibut and Lutsine Eryplast and Nutraisdín is also added.

  • With respect to general feeling left by the cream after application, the best rated brands by the OCU are Halibut, Lutsine Eryplast, Nutraisdín and Johnsons Baby regenerating cream.

Product Labeling

We may rarely look at the labeling of cosmetic and hygiene products, but it is very important if we want to avoid certain ingredients such as perfumes, alcohol, parabens or any other susceptible to cause allergy, especially if our baby is allergic or has dermatitis.

In this sense, the brands that according to the OCU would label better are Johnsons and Mitosyl.

The best rated as a whole

After analyzing all the points, the OCU considers that the three brands with the best quality they would be Mustela, Chicco and Lutsine Eryplast. While the three worst rated brands as a whole by consumers would be Johnsons Baby Regenerating Cream, Sebamed and Avéne Pediatril.
