Having a vaginal delivery after a C-section can be as safe as a second C-section: study

Many years ago, there was a belief that once a woman had had a C-section, the birth of her next children would have to be again through a C-section. However, for some years, several studies have shown that having a vaginal delivery after a C-section (PVDC) is possible and safe.

But, What is the risk of complications? Is the difference between a second C-section or a PVDC a lot? A new study analyzes it.

Published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the study analyzed how much the risk of complications was in both a second C-section and in a PVDC, and it was found that the difference is small.

For example, in the case of PVDC, the risk of complications was 11 between 1,000 deliverieswhile in the case of a programmed caesarean section, the risk is 6 in every 1,000 births. The researchers attribute this difference, to that approximately 50% of the PVDCs result in an emergency caesarean section.

But nevertheless, the number of complications for women who had had a successful PVDC was lower than if they had had a second C-section. In addition, the researchers point out that having a PVDC is the best for women who want to have another child, because although it is a possibility, it is unlikely to have a successful PVDC when two or more C-sections have already been had.

Remember that Each case is unique and the decision to have a second C-section or a PVDC is something you should consult with your doctor, who should know all your medical history in order to analyze the different options and help you choose the one that is best for you and your baby.
