The CSIC requests that the umbilical cords of all children born in Spain be preserved

The president of CSIC (Higher Council for Scientific Research) has requested that all umbilical cords of children born in Spain are preserved since they are really valuable and they are 100% useful. The applications are multiple, the cells containing the umbilical cord blood can be used to treat congenital diseases, bone marrow diseases, to fight immunodeficiencies or the fearsome acute leukemia, etc. In the post The umbilical cord donated in an altruistic way, we made reference to the importance of using the umbilical cord by donating it in the case of not wanting to keep it.

The importance is such that Carlos Martínez, president of the CSIC, has not hesitated to request that all umbilical cords of babies born, as the scientist indicates, should not be thrown away because it is a precious treasure capable of saving the baby's own life in the future and even that of another person. Spain may not have the necessary facilities to keep all the cords, at least not the public facilities, but as Carlos Martínez points out, it will be necessary to make agreements with the private initiative. In this aspect there should be no obstacles, we are talking about a very valuable material and although now it is not used, possibly in the future as new research and new technologies advance, the material provided by the umbilical cords can be used in many more fields, always oriented to the improvement of human health.

The field of biomedicine has advanced significantly in recent years, each discovery has shown and given greater value to the umbilical cord, current research suggests that only a small part of the beneficial potential it can provide has been discovered.

Keep or donate the umbilical cord, it can be life insurance for tomorrow, for your child or for anyone who needs it.
