Home birth still seen as an extravagance

This morning, in the program Public Mirror of Antena 3 one of the topics of the day was give birth at home, an issue that we talked about a lot in the blog. I have raised the volume and have followed the report carefully, which has led me to make some reflections.

First of all, I want to express congratulations on the subject. The more dissemination of home delivery, the more it will be considered an option for future moms. Last week I watched a report on doulas on Telemadrid. In other words, the subject begins to be on everyone's lips.

Beyond if you agree or not, you would or not, the important thing is that there is an alternative for women who do not want to give birth in a hospital.

Returning to the program, the guests to discuss the issue were four, well five. A mother, Matilde, who had given birth at home and took her little girl to the program. That by the way, he would have between a year and a half and two and gave him the tit in public (very discreet, without exhibitionism) without qualification in saying that he did not do it to feed it but for pampering.

The other guests were Anabel, the midwife who had attended her birth, a gynecologist at the Ruber and Lolita Flores who will think what she was doing there, but she has been a mother and also has the right to give her opinion.

Matilde, the girl's mother, told how wonderful her experience was when giving birth in her own home with the help of her midwife. He said he was afraid of hospital procedures and felt infinitely calmer at home.

The midwife talked about certain requirements to give birth at home such as a low-risk pregnancy, that has not suffered complications, that has passed all prenatal controls, that the woman is healthy and the main thing, that she is sure of The decision to give birth at home.

One of the central themes of the debate was the risk of not being in a hospital for possible complications. The midwife, who has been serving 400 deliveries at home since 1984 and only 10% have required a transfer to the hospital, in all cases because the dilation did not progress. He has also commented that he takes deliveries with a suitcase with local anesthesia, serums and other elements in case there is any complication and that at the slightest suspicion occurs when he is transferred to the hospital.

On the other hand, the gynecologist thought that giving birth at home is dangerous, that a complication can arise at a delivery when you least expect it (threat of signs of loss of fetal well-being, bleeding) and that an urgent transfer to a hospital where you don't Waiting is not the same as being inside the hospital. He considers it a risk that today there is no reason to assume.

Po Lolita, who also said, defended the delivery in the hospital but asked for a more humane and more accommodating treatment for patients.

Recall that in Holland giving birth at home is quite common, while in Spain there are still few women who choose it, as they commented in today's program, only 250. It still looks like a “weirdo” and as a bit Unconscious to the woman who chooses to give birth at home.

Although I have ever expressed that I would not give birth in my own home, if I had another child, I would choose a less interventional delivery (dilation bathtub, vertical position, no episiotomy and epidural if necessary), just as most have chosen of our readers when we have asked them what type of birth they choose.

I do not consider women who choose to give birth at home unconscious, much less crazy, on the contrary, I think they are brave and I admire them for their deep confidence in themselves. In any case, it is a very personal, very personal decision, without any influence that should be based on complete information. In general, most women who give birth at home express having lived a wonderful experience, which cannot be said by all women who have given birth in a hospital.

Finally, no matter how much one begins to talk about the issue in the media, which is spreading from one woman to another or by reaction to a bad experience in the hospital, it seems to me that still considered an extravagance, a rarity of a few that go against the flock. My reflection is: are they women who have stayed in the past and refuse to benefit from current medical advances or are they pioneers who will rescue the birth of industrialization so that it becomes a physiological event? There is the question.
