Breastfeeding is a shield that protects babies in an emergency

Under the generic motto "Breastfeeding, a vital response in emergencies. Are we prepared?" and the clear call that explains that breastfeeding is a shield that protects babies in an emergencyIt has officially presented what will be the World Breastfeeding Week this year, which will be held from August 1 to 7.

The children in cases of emergency, are the most vulnerable and in these circumstances, infant mortality increases between 2 and 70% due to diarrhea, malnutrition and respiratory diseases. An emergency can happen at any time and anywhere in the world, also in developed countries. That is why promoting breastfeeding provides a protective shield for children who can, thanks to it, get to save their lives.

The promotion of breastfeeding in normal situations prepares mothers to cope if the emergency arises and provides the little ones with additional support for their health.

The World Breastfeeding Week He has chosen this topic for 2009 after confirming how infant mortality increases enormously in emergencies but that it is markedly lower in the case of breastfed babies, being able to provide them with a safe, uncontaminated and sustainable food.

As we have already seen, during the offensive against Gaza, calls were made to cease donations of artificial milk to affected families, to prevent unnecessary use to refer children without wanting to.

The objectives of the campaign that will start from now on will be to inform mothers, professionals, the media and breastfeeding promoters of the enormous importance that the promotion of breastfeeding can have as a factor in child protection in all areas and especially in cases of emergency.

It is intended to counteract the campaigns and myths weaken breastfeeding rates, providing all social agents with information and awareness pointing out that breastfeeding protects babies in emergencies.
