Today May 15 is celebrated International Family Day, since in 1993 the General Assembly of the United Nations decided to choose this day for its commemoration.
The family, its different forms, is the most important element of human society, where children grow up and are educated, where they must receive love, care and protection, as well as an integral formation as human beings.
The annual celebration of International Family Day It is primarily aimed at improving the ability of nations to understand and seek solutions to the problems that families are suffering by creating effective protection policies. Citizens also have a responsibility to deepen the reflection on the situation of families in our communities and elsewhere, demanding that the constituted powers fulfill their function of protection and safeguarding those who need it most. After all, we are children of the same primeval mothers and are part of a universal family that has been extended to cover the Earth.
Families have changed a lot since our origins as a species. There was an ancestral time when families were matriarchy. There have been centuries in which families have reproduced the defects of a patriarchal and macho society. In some places it is the kinship lines and the extended families that fulfill the function that in our urban society has been left solely to the nuclear family.
Today there are monomarental families, some single parents, families in which the parents do not live and even others in which the fathers or mothers are two people of the same sex. But all are nourished by the biological and emotional impulse that is that desire to reproduce our genes and be with them eternal. Raising healthy, happy, free and non-violent children is the challenge that today's families have, forming the nest where our chicks will learn to fly to get where their wings take them, moved by the conviction that it is possible to change the world.
Not all families are happy and violence nests in some, and they hurt us or hurt us. There are destructive, sick families, the product of societies burdened by the power of the strongest that subject the small or at least violent. These families are also celebrated on this day, and for them there is hope of healing, even if necessary by breaking with them or changing the social structures that have maintained them. Not everything institutionalized is always benign and a society that does not recognize the equal rights complete of all its members, whatever their sex, age or race, deserves to be changed and overcome.
With this International Family Day The aim is to raise awareness about family issues and improve the capacity of our institutions to face problems related to it through global policies. Humanity changes today as it has changed throughout history and to protect the family is to accommodate the different formulas that people find to live their realities in all their diversity and freely.
