Do we name it dad?

Have you decided to give your children the names of dad or mom? Or those of grandparents? Tradition mandates that new family members bear the paternal, maternal names or from previous generations.

Surely you know cases of Pedros, Josés, Carlos ... grandfather-father-son (or Maria, or Carmen ...). I had to ask myself when they called home if they wanted to talk to Tomás father or son (it was difficult for my grandfather to ask, but his name was Tomás).

It is a tradition of centuries ago. In fact, many current surnames have the etymological meaning "son of", in many languages: Sánchez (son of Sancho), González (son of Gonzalo), Ferrandis (son of Ferran), Benson (son of Ben) ...

However, it is not uncommon today that Many parents decide to change this tradition and refuse to give their babies family names.

I know cases of parents who wanted to "perpetuate" their name but the mothers did not like it (not by the name itself, but by the fact of passing the name to the new generation), and imagine that the reverse will also be given cases.

I also know of many grandparents who claimed their name for their grandchildren, and some parents who "consented." Other grandparents have to resign, and there are until they get angry.

Those who refuse to give paternal names often argue that there will be no confusion in the future, that there will be no Juan-father, Juan-son coletilla to differentiate, or that if I had been a girl we would not put mine, so neither would it be because your grandfather is going to be mine and not mine ...

In my case, if I had a boy, we were sure that the name of the father (or the paternal grandfather, again the same) no, but that of the maternal grandfather was shuffled. With our two daughters we did have in mind to put Eva, like me. Because we like the name and it is not very common today for newborns.

I imagine that there will not be too many parents who give them the names of father, mother or grandparents without liking them, although it doesn't seem strange to me either. Tradition rules, many times.

And you, Have you chosen the name of dad or mom for your babies? How many generations do you know that perpetuate the name of the "ancestors"?
