WHO lists the anti-vaccine movement as one of the 10 threats to global health in 2019

A few months ago we shared the results of a report presented by the World Health Organization (WHO), which placed the lack of childhood vaccination within the greatest health risks of Europeans, alongside other bad habits such as Obesity and the consumption of tobacco and alcohol.

Now, in a new report that includes everyone, WHO has listed the anti-vaccine movement, referred to as "vaccinations vaccinations" within the 10 threats to global health in 2019.

Why the anti-vaccine movement is a threat to global health

In the case of the subject of vaccines, WHO refers to the anti-vaccine movement as "vaccinations vaccinations" and defines it as the waiver or refusal to be vaccinated, despite the availability of vaccines, and that threatens to reverse the progress made in the fight against vaccine preventable diseases.

We recently commented on the opinion of experts on the subject, who they consider that anti-vaccine movements are the main cause of the measles outbreak in Europe, disease that we saw quadruple in 2017.

Of course, although there are other reasons why people do not get vaccinated, such as lack of access to them, and in which WHO will continue to work during 2019, the anti-vaccine movement is one that threatens the health of all people, because choosing not to vaccinate reduces group immunity, endangering the lives of people who cannot get vaccinated for health reasons.

Measures to curb the anti-vaccine movement

Fortunately, more and more countries are coming together to try to fight the anti-vaccine movement, taking measures such as implementing fines or making vaccination mandatory in certain situations.

For example, we have the case of Australia, where the government will penalize parents who do not vaccinate their children with fines every 15 days. Or Italy, which imposed mandatory vaccination on children under six years of age for admission to nurseries and nursery schools. In 2017, there were 14 countries that have imposed mandatory vaccination.

As we know, vaccines are currently one of the most effective health interventions that exist and save between two and three million lives each year, and according to this new report, could save 1.5 million more, if global vaccine coverage improved.
