Parents must agree on the order of the baby's last names

If a new Civil Registry law is passed, approved by the Council of Ministers and waiting to be processed in Congress, the parents must agree on the order of the baby's last names.

So far, when a newborn is enrolled, the father's last name has a prevalence over that of the mother, although you can also request to reverse the order if the parents so wish, or the child being of legal age, prior bureaucratic pilgrimage.

However, a controversial reform that would take effect in two years if the law is passed without change eliminate the preference of the father's last name In newborns.

The parents will have to decide the order of the last names that the child will carry, and if there is no agreement, they will be decided in alphabetical order, a quite controversial point, no doubt.

What does the new law say

According to article 49,

"The birth registration will include the identity data of the newborn consisting of the name that is imposed on him and the surnames that correspond to him according to his affiliation (...) The filiation determines the surnames. If the filiation is determined by both lines, the father and the mother by mutual agreement may decide the order of the surnames "
"In case of disagreement or when the surnames have not been recorded in the application for registration, the Civil Registry Officer will determine the order of the surnames according to their alphabetical order."

A controversial measure

It is a measure that, it seems good or bad, what is no doubt is that it comes to break a deep-rooted tradition in society. The last names have a very strong symbolism in people, in families and to propose a change of this nature is at least intense.

Surely there will be everything. Those who prefer to continue with the usual system, with the prevalence of the father's last name, who prefer the mother's first because of not losing the last name, and surely those who end up leaving the decision to free will of the alphabet because they have failed to reach an agreement.

Surname in alphabetical order

If there is no agreement, instead of always prevailing the father's last name, as until now, the order of the last names will be determined by alphabetical order, which poses a conflict in the future: in a few years some surnames, those that are at the tail of the alphabet, could begin to disappear.

The new law also incorporates other reforms, but we would like to know your opinion on it, which is undoubtedly the most controversial, Do you agree that parents can choose the order of the baby's last name?
