90 pregnant teenagers in a Memphis institute

On the other side of the puddle the most unlikely news usually arrives and this is one of them. Nothing less than 90 teenage students at the Frayser High School in Memphis have become pregnant or have had a baby in the last school year.

A few days ago the US government made public the rate of teenage pregnancies and was proud to report that this year had declined compared to the previous year, with 39 pregnancies per 1,000 teenagers between 15 and 19 years.

In this climate of positivism this news appears that breaks the statistics, since 26% of the girls at the Memphis Institute have become pregnant in the last year.

Sex education?

This is where one wonders what kind of sex education young people have received from that institute, if they have received it, because 90 are the girls who have become pregnant, but as we all know the chances of pregnancy under normal conditions are close 25%, so making accounts (26% of the girls have stayed) it seems that all the girls in that institute have had unprotected sex.

Sex education?

You will be thinking that I make a mistake repeating the title "Sex education?", But the truth is that no (well, yes, because it is redundant and it is not necessary to use it, but I wanted to use it again to highlight what I will explain now) . After learning about these 90 cases, the Memphis school authorities have launched a prevention campaign called "Just say no to sex", which will surely have an overwhelming reception by the students (read with irony , please).

Apparently they have thought that this initiative will serve to prevent unwanted pregnancies. In the words of Deborah Hester Harrison of Girls Inc .:

The issue is to teach them to say 'no'. We are not going to have babies. No, we will not have sex. Or at least we are going to protect ourselves if we are going to do something. So that's the purpose, teach these girls how to say no. They do not know how to do it.

Honestly, I think it's very good to teach people to say no, since sometimes it costs a little, but please say no when a cocktail Molotov of hormones is about to explode is very difficult. Wouldn't it be easier to explain how useful a condom can be?

Moreover, with 90 cases of pregnancies and children, it could be very educational to show girls and boys what life is like for those who have been mothers as teenagers. Perhaps that vision makes them rethink many things and take precautions.
