Childhood obesity alarm in Mexico

Obesity and overweight are defined as an abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that can be harmful to health. Mexico is the first place worldwide in cases of childhood obesity, still above the United States, who remains the first in terms of obesity in the general population. Specifically, almost 70% of Mexicans have overweight problems, and of these, 30% are obese.

In Mexico alone, obesity contributes to a number close to 200,000 deaths per year, as it is an important risk factor for chronic degenerative diseases, such as type two diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart, cerebrovascular diseases and hypertension.

WHO notes that obesity is a worldwide problem, and in Mexico it is a disease that has reached the degree of pandemic, the main victims being children.

As the Mexican NGO "The power of the consumer" asserts, overweight and obesity in children between five and eleven in Mexico increased by 40% between 1999 and 2006.

According to the National Health Survey, during the same period of time, the combined prevalence of overweight and obesity in girls and boys of the same age range, increased in such a way that in 1999, 1 in 5 school children was affected, and in 2006 they were 1 in 4. And these numbers do not stop, as we will see next.

The video emphasizes this problem, and gives us data on childhood obesity as the following:

  • Childhood obesity can cut life expectancy of children suffering from it by up to seven years.
