"May your love be your best medicine": campaign against self-medication in pregnancy and lactation

Starting tomorrow in Peru, the National Information Campaign and promotion of the appropriate use of medicines in pregnancy and lactation, which has among other promotional images with this one that we present to you and which bears the motto "May your love be your best medicine"

Specialists warn that pregnant women and nursing women should only ingest the medications prescribed by a doctor or obstetrician and it can also be dangerous to self-medicate babies.

Taking or giving medication irresponsibly is a danger to the health of the pregnant woman and the baby, since the drugs reach the fetus through the placenta, or the baby through the milk, and can generally cause adverse effects. Therefore, before any symptoms of illness, doctors should be consulted and not self-medicate.

Remember that medications or other chemical compounds present in breast milk may affect the infant, but that it is not a norm, but there are some medications that would affect you and others that would not. That is why it is important to know what medications the nursing mother can take and always consult a professional.

If we talk about pregnancy, keep in mind that during pregnancy there are a series of physiological changes that can alter both the efficacy and safety of medications. In addition, future moms should know that most of the drugs commonly used cross the placental barrier and can interfere with embryonic development.

This is a campaign under the General Directorate of Medicines, Supplies and Drugs (Digemid) of Peru and we hope that with the motto "May your love be your best medicine" The message of the dangers of self-medication reaches many future mothers, mothers and the whole society.
