Prevention is the most viable option to curb the childhood obesity epidemic

You will know that in this blog we are aware of the social and health problem posed by the different eating disorders in pediatric population.

There are few times that we have warned about the growing number of overweight or obese minors. And as for the responsibility of family and society, it has also been widely addressed. We recently commented that we are not complying with the recommendations (to prevent these diseases) related to exercise and food. Today I bring you the advice disseminated by the World Health Organization.

From this organization they tell us that prevention is the most viable option to curb the epidemic of childhood obesity, and that the objective of this fight is to achieve a caloric balance that is maintained throughout life.

General recommendations

  • Increase consumption of Fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts.

  • Reduce total fat intake and replace saturated ones with unsaturated ones.

  • Reduce the sugar intake.

  • Maintain physical activity: a minimum of 60 minutes a day of physical activity of moderate or vigorous intensity that is appropriate for the development phase and consists of various activities. To control weight, greater physical activity may be necessary.

Overweight, obesity and related noncommunicable diseases are largely preventable

But not everything comes down to the recommendations we can adopt as a family, because to stop the epidemic of childhood obesity, a sustained political commitment is necessary and the collaboration of many stakeholders, public and private.

Governments, international partners, civil society, non-governmental organizations and the private sector they have a fundamental role in creating healthy environments and conditions of affordability and accessibility of healthier dietary options for children and adolescents.
