"10 x childhood" initiative in Mexico

The "10 x childhood" initiative establishes ten strategic measures to advance the defense and fulfillment of children's rights and teenagers in Mexico. It has been presented by representatives of Unicef México and its Advisory Council together with the Network of Children's Rights in Mexico (Redim).

The initiative focuses on those points that pose a risk to children and adolescents, such as infant mortality, teenage pregnancies, obesity, poverty, access to basic education ... And he ends up wondering,

If Mexico has laws that protect the rights of girls, boys and adolescents, why don't they apply effectively?

It is not the first time that at the time of elections the attention of politicians is called, we are already talking about the video of "uncomfortable children" and the controversy that aroused in Mexican society by presenting a reality of corrupt politicians and institutions.

These days the initiative has jumped to the media because the presidential candidate Vázquez Mota has joined her in defense of the little ones. Precisely "10 per childhood" claims that electoral programs incorporate these measures and that political activity does not forget them, as they should be priority and permanent.

However, adhering before having power to any proposal and forgetting it later is common, and I say it for any country and any politician.

But, leaving aside these tricky issues, here we have the ten points that he claims the "10 x childhood" initiative in Mexico, its decalogue:

  • Guarantee all children adequate health and nutrition in early childhood to ensure a good start in life.
  • Ensure access to safe drinking water and healthy food in all schools, as well as educational strategies for good nutrition.
  • Grant free birth certificates to all children in their first year of life.
  • Ensure quality education for the almost 40 million children and adolescents in the country, with special attention to those with disabilities.
  • Ensure supports so that all teenagers can enter and finish upper middle school.
  • Open participation spaces for adolescents in the family, school and community.
  • Ensure that adolescents have sexual and reproductive health information and services to reduce early pregnancies.
  • Promote the approval of the Federal Law of Justice for Adolescents and its effective implementation.
  • Protect children and adolescents against violence in the family, school and community.
  • Present an initiative of the General Law on the Rights of Children and Adolescents, which promotes, protects and guarantees their rights.

Definitely, the "10 x childhood" initiative in Mexico proposes strategic measures to advance the defense of children's rights and adolescents with the support of government institutions, local and federal congresses, and civil society in order to comply with the principles established in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
